We perform active surveillance for rheumatic heart disease by echocardiographic screening of children and adolescents in regions of the world where rheumatic heart disease is endemic.

Children diagnosed with rheumatic heart disease are started on regular secondary  antibiotic prevention, and are being prospectively followed. Children with advanced  stages of valvular failure undergo valvular surgery or percutaneous cardiac  intervention. We make a point in performing all interventions in the local context with an  emphasis on local campacity strengthening.
